AEON Bank Glitch Leaves Customer with RM1 Billion Account Balance

AEON Bank has resolved a technical issue linked to a promotional campaign after a customer reported seeing more than RM1 billion in his account on 14 October.

In a Threads post, the customer shared a screenshot showing RM1,000,315,879 in a transaction recorded at approximately 10.36am.

Listed under “Bank adjustment”, the transaction carried the description “Cash Reward – Merdeka / Malaysia Day 2026 Campaign (Cycle 6)”.

The entry appeared to relate to AEON Bank’s Merdeka and Malaysia Day promotional campaign, which ran from 17 August to 27 September 2026.

Customers who spent at least RM15 through DuitNow QR stood a chance to receive RM31 in cash rewards. AEON Bank allocated RM12,834 in total rewards to 414 winners across six weekly cycles.

After noticing the unusually large balance in his banking app, the customer contacted AEON Bank to report the issue.

His account was temporarily restricted while the bank addressed the problem. AEON Bank subsequently reversed the erroneous transaction on the same day, leaving his original balance unaffected.

In a follow-up Threads post, the customer confirmed that the issue had been resolved. He also said AEON Bank had indicated it would offer him a reward for reporting the error, although details were still pending.

In a public statement, AEON Bank acknowledged that an issue associated with a recent promotion had caused some account balances to display incorrectly.

The digital bank said it promptly resolved the issue and confirmed that no customer accounts or information had been compromised.

AEON Bank did not disclose the technical cause of the error or the number of customers affected.
