The investment was approved by ABA’s Executive Committee, acting on a recommendation from the association’s Venture Investment Committee, which assesses opportunities aligned with the ABA’s broader mission of supporting a competitive and innovative banking industry. The ABA did not disclose the size of its commitment.
Founded in 2021, BankTech Ventures operates as a strategic fund rather than a purely financial one. It works with more than 125 community and regional banks, which gives the fund a direct channel into the technology decisions those institutions are making. The model is designed to generate returns for limited partners while simultaneously providing those same banks with early access to vetted vendors and the opportunity to pilot emerging products.
ABA President and chief executive Rob Nichols said the fund’s network and its focus on bank-specific technology made it a compelling fit. “BankTech Ventures has built a strong network of community bank partners and has focused on technologies designed specifically for the banking industry,” he said. “This investment gives ABA a unique opportunity to gain early insight into emerging innovations while supporting technologies that can help banks better serve their customers.”
Carey Ransom, managing director at BankTech Ventures, said the ABA’s broad membership and industry standing made it a strategically valuable addition to Fund II’s investor base, given its reach across institutions of all sizes.
The investment reflects a structural tension that has persisted across the US community and regional banking sector for several years. Smaller institutions typically lack the technology budgets and internal development capacity of the large nationals, yet face the same competitive pressure from digital-only challengers and non-bank payment providers.
