With Thar OG, Mahindra gives the original a new lease of life
A new platform, revised suspension, electric power steering and upgraded engines give the three-door SUV a substantial engineering refresh, with Mahindra continuing to see strong demand even after the arrival of the five-door Roxx.
The M_Glyde 4G platform offers 9 per cent higher bending stiffness and 11 per cent higher torsional stiffness than the outgoing architecture.
For Mahindra & Mahindra , the latest Thar update is less about what has been added to the vehicle than about what it says about how the automaker is engineering an established product for its next phase. The New Mahindra Thar OG , with introductory prices starting at ₹10.32 lakh, moves the three-door SUV onto Mahindra’s M_Glyde 4G platform and adds a PentaLink rear suspension with Watts Link, frequency-dependent damping, electric power steering, and an electronic locking differential. The company has also upgraded its petrol and 2.2-litre diesel powertrains, while retaining the existing 1.5-litre diesel in the range. Taken individually, these are product upgrades. Taken together, they point to something more relevant for the industry: Mahindra is transferring engineering developed across its newer SUV programmes into an established nameplate rather than treating the three-door Thar as a product nearing the end of its lifecycle. R. Velusamy, President, Automotive Business, Mahindra & Mahindra, told ETAuto that the company has brought together technologies already introduced on newer products to improve both the on-road and off-road behaviour of the Thar.
The M_Glyde 4G platform, he said, delivers 9 per cent higher bending stiffness and 11 per cent higher torsional stiffness than the outgoing architecture.
