Road Safety Takes Centre Stage at 27th SAFE Annual Convention

Gandhinagar, September 23, 2026: The Society for Automotive Fitness & Environment (SAFE), an initiative of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), hosted its 27th SAFE Annual Convention in Gandhinagar under the Safe Journey (सुरक्षित सफर) initiative. Organised in association with the Transport Department and Gujarat Road Safety Authority, Government of Gujarat, the convention focused on building a safer mobility ecosystem through shared responsibility, technology and stronger road safety practices. ‘Safe Journey: A Collective Journey Towards Safety with Responsibility’, the event brought together policymakers, industry leaders, road safety experts and other stakeholders to discuss behavioural change, enforcement, vehicle and road engineering, emergency care and data-driven approaches to road safety.

Addressing the gathering, Pravin Gordhanji Mali, Minister of State, Forests and Environment, Climate Change and Transport, Government of Gujarat, emphasised the importance of responsible road behaviour. He noted that awareness, civic sense and responsible conduct are as important as technology in reducing road fatalities.

P R Patelia, Secretary, Roads & Buildings Department, Government of Gujarat, highlighted the diversity of vehicles and road users in India and called for innovative solutions to address the country’s road safety challenges. Satish Patel, Commissioner, Gujarat Road Safety Authority, stressed the need for sustained collaboration among all stakeholders.

Alok Jaitley, President, SAFE and Executive Officer, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd, said that India’s growth aspirations require a mobility ecosystem that is safe, responsible, efficient and sustainable, adding that road safety can be strengthened only through coordinated action.

The inaugural session, ‘A Systems Approach to Road Safety in India, ’ saw the launch of the SIAM-SAFE context paper, Analysing India’s Imperatives for Road Safety .
