Rivian R2 Sales Are So Strong It’s Outselling Both R1 Models Combined

The strong sales come despite Rivian currently only offering the most expensive model, the $59,485 R2 Performance.

The cat’s out of the bag. The Rivian R2 is good, and customers know it. In fact, they’re so in the know that the R2 is outselling the R1T and R1S combined, the company confirmed during its third-quarter earnings call. Along with outselling the other customer-focused products, the R2 is also outselling Rivian’s EDV delivery vans.

Those strong sales figures come in spite of Rivian still selling the R2 in just its most expensive Performance trim, which starts at $59,485. The $55,485 Premium trim and the long-awaited $46,485 base model are still MIA, with no clear arrival date scheduled. Rivian’s consumer site currently lists the R2 Premium as arriving in late 2026, while the Standard isn’t set to arrive until some time next year. Even in its most expensive form, the R2 is considerably less expensive than its pickup- and three-row SUV stablemates, which start at $81,885 and $85,885, respectively.

The launch of the smaller SUV helped Rivian post a sales increase of 46 percent year-over-year, including 19,248 in the third quarter. Rivian says the R2’s strong showing means the company is able to increase its yearly sales projections to between 67,000 and 70,000 vehicles; the previous projection was for between 65,000 and 70,000 vehicles. Rivian didn’t give an exact breakdown of how many R2s were sold, but before production started, the company announced a target of 20,000 vehicles this year.
