Qronge X1 Spark L Review: Does a $1,299 Sur-Ron Light Bee alternative cut the right corners?

If you are late to the pre-teen suburban e-moto scene, we’ve been wading through the exploding market of low-cost Sur-Ron competitors over the past months. While we can all debate the safety and legality issues these bikes bring, the reality is that they are incredibly popular and useful for those who can get around their neighborhoods and back roads and are comfortable hitting speeds up to and above 40mph. Enter the low cost $1299 Qronge X1 Spark L.

Qronge has spent the last couple of years building a reputation the way most budget e-bike brands do: undercut an established category by a factor of two or three and hope the compromises don’t show up until long after the warranty window closes. The X1 Spark L is the company’s bid at the “mini electric dirt bike” segment that Sur-Ron created and Talaria, Segway, and a dozen Amazon-native brands have since piled into. However, at $1,299, it’s positioned directly against bikes that cost 3-4x as much — so the real question isn’t whether it’s fun in a parking lot. It’s whether it survives actual trail use, and whether the spec sheet is telling the truth.

For us in the last month, it has largely been a pleasant surprise.

8Ah (1,728Wh) battery. The L steps up with 17″/14″ wheels instead of the M’s 14″/12″ setup, a full-twist throttle, and a heavier-duty 420H chain — a sensible upgrade given how much torque a budget drivetrain is being asked to absorb. Qronge claims a 50 mph top speed and up to 60 miles of range.
