Police apprehend motorised sofa in North Carolina

In the USA, police officers in the city of Charlotte encountered a moving sofa during nighttime traffic. The upholstered furniture was mounted on two e-scooters, with the roadworthiness of the contraption still unclear. Afterwards, the two people riding the sofa were made to continue on foot.

The police in Charlotte, North Carolina, USA, have shared an unusual incident. On Instagram, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department posted a photo of a vehicle not approved for public road use, commenting: “Well, this was certainly a first… Our [officers] encountered quite the situation this weekend when they stopped two gentlemen traveling down S. Tryon Street on a couch… Yes, an actual couch.”

Even the officers were taken aback. Apparently, two people had mounted a two-seater sofa onto two electric scooters to create a four-wheeled contraption. How did they manage to balance and steer it? Probably only through precise, synchronised steering while in motion. The fact that it caught the police’s attention at all suggests it had at least some limited roadworthiness.

” the police wrote in their Instagram post. They continued: “Ask yourself: Should this be on a road… with actual cars… will the sheer shock of seeing this on the road cause other drivers to lose focus and drive unsafely? If the answer feels even slightly like ‘yes,’ maybe rethink the ride.
