Six brand-new Mazda MX-5s will exist in a color the automaker has never officially sold on this generation of car, and the only way to get one is to win a lottery in a parking lot at Fuji Speedway. Mazda calls it the Roadster FSW Ver.2.
The car is not a Mazda Motor Corporation creation in the traditional sense. It is a joint project from four Japanese dealers, Koshin Mazda, Shizuoka Mazda, Tokai Mazda Sales, and Kanto Mazda, built on the current Roadster S Special Package with Jet Black Mica interior trim.
The color is Sunflower Yellow, last seen on the facelifted NC-generation Miata and sold in the US as Competition Yellow on the 2009 and 2010 model years. It has never appeared on an ND-generation car before this project.
Buyers do not pay Mazda directly for a custom job. The paint and authentication work happens at Mazda Engineering & Technology in Hiroshima, the same in-house shop that builds Mazda's concept cars, which makes the FSW Ver.2 about as close to a factory special as an outside project can get. Each of the six cars ships with a certificate from Mazda E&T confirming its origin.
The yellow treatment costs an additional ¥1,452,000, or roughly $9,400, stacked on top of a standard Roadster's price. That covers the exterior repaint plus color-matched interior door trim, air conditioning vents, and the key fob, so the yellow theme carries through the cabin, not just the body panels.
