In the 1950s, the Porsche 356 came in a variety of styles. Buyers could opt for a businesslike coupe. There was also the sunnier convertible. If you were into something a little racier, the great-looking Speedster lived up to its name. However, if you wanted a limousine, Porsche didn’t build one. But somebody did.
This one-off, extra-long 1953 Porsche 356 just turned up over at Bring a Trailer (which, like Car and Driver, is part of Hearst Autos), and safe to say the purists are none too pleased. Never mind them, this thing is hilarious, and extremely well-executed. If two Porschephiles wanted to get hitched, it’s about as great a wedding limo as you could hope for.
In this particular case, it was the father of the bride who was really into Porsche 356s, and ordered this car for his daughter’s wedding in 2001. Never mind outlaw Porsche builds; this one’s an in-law. The late John Dixon of Dayton, Ohio, amassed a collection of some of the rarest Porsches over the years. He called the collection the Taj Ma Garaj, and when it was sold at auction after his passing, one of the 356s he owned, a 356A Carrera GT Speedster, fetched well over a million dollars.
So, a serious collector, but also someone with a sense of fun, the sort of person to have multiple Porsche tractors. This limo was built from a couple of 356s, with an enormous amount of customization, and the powerplant from a Porsche 912.
