Nio Firefly wins 2026 Red Dot Award for smart cockpit design

Nio Inc's (NYSE: NIO) Firefly has won Germany's 2026 Red Dot Award, earning fresh recognition for the compact electric vehicle brand's design.

Firefly received the Red Dot Award: Brands & Communication Design for its Aster OS Multisensory Smart Cockpit System, the brand said in a statement on Saturday.

The ceremony was held on November 6 at the Konzerthaus Berlin in Germany. The winning project falls under the Interface & User Experience Design category.

The Red Dot Design Award dates back to 1955 and covers 3 disciplines: Product Design, Brands & Communication Design, and Design Concept.

Firefly said its context-aware home screen adapts to driving scenarios and user preferences, combining visual, auditory and haptic feedback to help drivers understand and control the system.

Users can adjust the temperature and fan speed with 2-finger swipes, which also trigger sound and ambient lighting feedback. The design aims to reduce the need for drivers to look away from the road, the brand said.

When music is playing, the system extracts colors from the album artwork and analyzes the music's frequency spectrum and rhythm, synchronizing on-screen graphics with cabin ambient lighting to create a multisensory experience.

On the same day it received the Red Dot Award, Firefly announced the release of Aster OS 2.1.5, adding support for upgrades to the 60-kWh long-range battery pack. The software update is being rolled out to users in batches.

The 60-kWh battery pack, launched on October 23 , offers a CLTC range of 560 kilometers (348 miles), about 33% more than the 42-kWh version's 420 kilometers.
