Maiden Land Rover EV, Jaguar Type 01 to drive JLR India’s growth strategy in 2027

JLR India MD Rajan Amba says that the upcoming product offensive of the company will build on strong baseline growth driven by its core ICE SUV portfolio.

Jaguar Land Rover, the Tata Motors-owned luxury carmaker, has drawn up a strategy to scale up its India business significantly in 2027. The latest move to start local assembly of the Defender SUV, its best-selling model, is a key move under this strategy. The locally assembled Defender will go on sale in a few days and will be up to ₹34 lakhs cheaper than the currently imported version. This could help JLR India power ahead better as an estimated 40 per cent of its sales come from the Defender. The coming year will be a unique year for the luxury car maker as it will enter the emerging Electric Vehicle (EV) space for the first time. Luxury EVs are gaining more traction than models in the volume segment. Depending on the brand, EVs contribute up to 25 per cent in the Indian luxury car segment. Advt

The company’s maiden battery electric vehicle (BEV), Range Rover Electric , will go on sale in India by mid 2027. “I think we should have it for sale from May/June,” says Rajan Amba, MD, JLR India. Unlike its current portfolio, the EVs will be brought in through the fully built import route, at least for the first few years. There’ll be a trio of Range Rover EVs, with Range Rover Sport and the Range Rover GT being the other two.
