HPCL widens EV charging footprint and shifts focus to freight corridors

HPCL has expanded its EV charging network to 5,826 facilities and is now targeting commercial transport with 240-kW chargers for trucks and buses. The company is using its fuel-retail network and partnerships to build highway charging corridors, battery swapping and multi-energy outlets.

HPCL is pushing its mobility business beyond the familiar petrol-pump model, and the latest expansion suggests the shift is gathering pace. According to The Hindu BusinessLine , the state-run fuel retailer had 5,826 EV charging facilities across 25,238 outlets as of September 1, up from about 5,400 in March.

The increase is modest in percentage terms, but the strategic direction is more important than the headline number. HPCL is now turning its attention to commercial transport, with 240-kW ultra-fast chargers being deployed for electric trucks and buses on 50 highway corridors under the PM E-DRIVE programme .

The company’s charging footprint has been built largely on the back of its existing retail network rather than through a separate EV-only chain. That gives HPCL a ready-made distribution advantage, especially at a time when India’s public charging market is still fragmented and unevenly spread across cities and highways.

The latest count of 5,826 facilities is significant against the backdrop of the country’s broader charging ecosystem. Government data cited in the report shows India has 52,718 public EV charging stations, which means HPCL’s network accounts for roughly 11 per cent of the total.
