Ford says its top-spec Fathom EV truck will still start well below the average cost of a new car.
Skeptics of the Ford Fathom EV pickup have questioned Ford’s ability to provide a sub-$30,000 truck since its introduction last year, but Andrew Frick, president of Ford’s Model e division, told the Detroit Free Press that even the top trim will remain below $40,000.
After taking a prototype Fathom for a test drive last month, Ford CEO Jim Farley was reportedly blown away by the small truck’s handling and performance, calling it a “breakthrough product.” He also said the Fathom is on track to hit the market toward the end of 2027, though the team will need to keep developing at a rapid pace to get it out on time and within budget.

Ford announced the Fathom’s starting price in August. At $29,945, the pickup truck offers an affordable way to enter the EV world, and it’s the first to ride on Ford’s Universal Electric Vehicle (UEV) platform. The Fathom is already confirmed to be equipped with a touchscreen, built-in Apple Maps, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Blue Cruise hands-free driving capabilities.
The UEV platform operates on a 400-volt electrical architecture, so charging won’t be as quick as vehicles that use an 800-volt system, but Ford says the trade-off for a lighter, more affordable vehicle is worth it. It’ll also use a 48-volt system instead of the traditional 12-volt system used in most vehicles; the higher voltage is intended to increase power and fuel efficiency.
