It feels like Jaguar has been teasing the Type 01 sedan—and its impossibly long body barely hidden by camouflage stretched over every panel—for years now. Thankfully, it hasn’t been that long, and besides: the wait is over. It’s time to finally dig into this striking four-door, which to our delight has barely deviated from the concept’s design.
Jaguar was not shy in admitting that the Type 01 is a design-led affair. Obviously, that fact shines through in every single picture of the thing. Its proportions are proper old-school Jag sedan: the hood stretches off to Narnia, the cabin’s in a different ZIP code than the headlights, and the rear end tapers off to one of the most stylistically unique rear ends we’ve ever seen on a production car.

In person, the Type 01 almost feels like a car within a car, like some sort of Russian nesting doll affair. Take a gander just below the windows, where the body juts out sideways, surrounding the glass with these flat expanses that confer serious visual width via that matryoshka look. That broad shoulder continues all the way back—don’t ask what it’ll cost to replace that rear quarter panel. The rear end ditches windows entirely in favor of a newfangled camera-mirror setup, but don’t think for a second that Jaguar replaced that glass with cargo space; power hardware rises so far above the rear axle that what’s left of a trunk is only good for a checked bag or two, or a handful of carry-ons.
