In China, Chery has entered the megawatt charging race. Following the introduction of megawatt charging solutions by BYD, Geely, and Huawei, the state-owned automaker now presents a charger with 1.44 MW peak output.
Chery will market the new charging system under the name ‘Volt-Dragon’ and states that charging a battery from 10 to 97 per cent with this device takes 6 minutes and 50 seconds. The manufacturer specifies a peak power of 1.44 MW.
According to the industry portal Car News China, Chery presented the ‘Volt-Dragon’ system at its in-house Global Innovation Conference, alongside its own large AI language model called CheryMind. This model is intended to be linked with future robotaxis, L4 assistance systems, and the ‘Volt-Dragon’ charging infrastructure. However, it remains unclear how this integration will work in practice.
Meanwhile, BYD, Huawei, and Geely have already begun rolling out their own megawatt chargers. BYD states that its Flash Charging system takes 6 minutes and 27 seconds to charge from 10 to 98 per cent. The other two companies specify a charging window of between 8 and 9 minutes for the same range.
Chery has also announced that the ‘Volt-Dragon’ system will in the future support automated charging (via a robotic arm) as well as vehicle-to-grid power feedback. As for compatible vehicles in Chery’s lineup, no details have been revealed yet. Car News China only notes that such vehicles will likely be based on 800- or 1000-volt platforms.
The initial rollout will include 100 MW stations in ten cities, with Chery expected to announce more detailed expansion plans before the end of 2026.
