AEM’s rare earth-free Titan heavy-duty motor delivers 700 kW peak power

Advanced Electric Machines (AEM) has put performance figures on Titan, the largest and highest-torque motor in its rare earth-free HDRM range. The British company rates the motor at up to 700 kW and 5,000 Nm peak, according to figures reported by Electrive. AEM did not disclose any performance data when it announced the motor.

In continuous operation, Titan is rated at 500 kW and 3,500 Nm. Maximum speed is 4,000 rpm and dry weight is roughly 200 kg. AEM credits compressed coils and a revised thermal management system for the power and torque density, and the extruded housing can be built in different lengths and fitted with a choice of output shafts. The motor is designed to work with a range of inverters.

Titan uses no permanent magnets, so there are no rare earth elements in it. That removes the risk of demagnetization at high temperatures and speeds, the company says, and the motor produces no cogging torque even at high speed. A freewheeling function lets it coast without drive torque, and AEM states that neither back-EMF nor short-circuit currents occur in the event of a fault.

No efficiency figure has been published, and the company has not described the motor principle behind HDRM.

First samples are expected in Q3 2027, and Titan exists as a detailed 3D concept. AEM has tied the program to a £16-million investment in its electric powertrain technologies.

A second, smaller product pairs the company’s HDRM150 motor with a matched air-cooled inverter as a drop-in unit that operates at up to 700 V and exceeds 30 kW peak motor output.
