How to Use Vintage Denim for Classic Halloween Costumes

Need a quick Halloween costume? Look no further than your denim collection.

With vintage and vintage-inspired denim remaining a steadfast trend for men and women, you likely already own a worn-in Trucker jacket, beat-up flare jeans or a pair of overalls that can serve as the foundation for a classic slasher-film costume. The horror genre offers endless costume inspiration, from Jack Torrance’s late-1970s everyman look in “The Shining” to Laurie Strode’s high-waisted bell-bottoms in “Halloween.”

So, before you resort to Spirit Halloween’s leftovers, take a trip down spooky memory lane and pull together a nostalgic look using pieces already in your closet.

“The Shining,” the 1980 Stanley Kubrick horror classic based on Stephen King’s novel, is the perfect alt-family costume idea. The film’s wintry wardrobe also makes it cool-weather friendly.

Replicate Jack Torrance’s handyman aesthetic (played by Jack Nicholson) in Wrangler’s Cowboy Cut jeans, a check flannel shirt and a corduroy bomber jacket. A toy ax is a must. Or reimagine one of Wendy Torrance’s (played by Shelley Duvall) chicest outfits—a Southwest-inspired look with straight-fit jeans, an embroidered jacket, plaid scarf and moccasins.

The family costume isn’t complete without little Danny Torrance (played by Danny Lloyd), dressed in denim overalls, chunky novelty knits and red Converse sneakers.

“Halloween” has spurred endless sequels, but the original 1978 film starring Jamie Lee Curtis remains the OG—for its soundtrack, suspense and ’70s style.
