How Jordan Roth Is Fashioning His Life Into Art

With a new book, an installation in Paris and a burgeoning acting career, the Tony Award-winning theater producer is revealing fresh layers of creative depth.

PARIS — For Jordan Roth, moving out of his West Village apartment was like shedding an old skin.

Over the course of 15 years, the modernist space with expansive views of the Hudson River had witnessed many of the Broadway producer’s major milestones – from building a life with his husband Richie Jackson and their son Levi, to his burgeoning public persona as a red carpet fixture, artist and now actor.

“It is the home that we were married in. It’s the home where our son was born, and it is the place where I experienced my entire aesthetic expansion,” he recalled.

But like the dark Prada suits that were his uniform for many years, by 2025, the apartment no longer reflected Roth’s personality. As he prepared to move into an ornate town house, whose design brief he summed up as “the chicest bordello you have ever seen,” he decided to document his journey in the language he’s most fluent in: fashion.

“Literally on the last day — the movers were coming to take the furniture — I did a photo shoot of 14 different looks that I had worn over the years in this home,” Roth said.

Those portraits were collaged onto textiles and draped over furniture for his exhibition, “To Think of the Tranquil Life of Things,” presented at the 18th-century Hôtel de Guise in Paris as part of the Design Miami Paris collectible design fair.
