The French fashion house’s exhibition features 14 artists and offers a preview of its upcoming Keith Haring collaboration.
PARIS — At Louis Vuitton’s stand at Art Basel Paris, each work of art comes with a matching handbag.
The French fashion house is celebrating its history of collaborations with an exhibition of Capucines bags customized by 14 artists, alongside the original works that inspired them.
“We have a dialogue between the art that inspired the bag and the bag that inspired the artist. It’s pretty amazing to see this relationship between this beautiful bag and the artists that collaborate with us,” Pietro Beccari, chairman and chief executive officer of Louis Vuitton, told WWD.
Participants range from Urs Fischer, Sam Falls and Alex Israel, who have taken part in the Artycapucines project in recent years, to Takashi Murakami and Yayoi Kusama, who have created entire collections with the luxury brand.
The stand also provides a sneak peek into the eighth edition of Artycapucines, which consists of 13 designs inspired by the work of Keith Haring. The capsule line will be followed by a wider collection rolling out worldwide from Jan. 1, as part of a partnership with the Keith Haring Foundation.
Among the exhibits is the origin of the new tie-up: a battered Vuitton suitcase that Haring customized with his “Radiant Baby” drawing in the ‘80s. Recently acquired by Vuitton’s heritage department, it also inspired the cruise 2027 collection presented by Nicolas Ghesquière, artistic director of womenswear at Vuitton, in New York City in May.
