Northern Lights Signs 200,000-Ton CCS Agreement With Öresundskraft

Northern Lights JV has executed a commercial agreement with Swedish energy company Öresundskraft Kraft & Värme AB for the cross-border transport and permanent geological storage of captured CO2 from the Filbornaverket waste-to-energy facility in Helsingborg, Sweden.

Under the terms of the agreement, Northern Lights will manage up to 200,000 metric tons of biogenic and fossil CO2 per year beginning in late 2029. Filbornaverket processes municipal waste to produce power and district heating for the Helsingborg region.

The project employs a multimodal logistics model. Flue gas emissions will be captured using an amine absorption process, chilled, and compressed before being transported by road truck to the Port of Halland in Halmstad.

Dedicated LCO2 liquid carriers will then ship the CO2 to Northern Lights’ receiving terminal in Øygarden, Norway, for pipeline injection into an offshore subsea storage reservoir 8,500 feet beneath the seabed.

Supported by a €60 million (~$67.1 million) grant from the EU Innovation Fund, Öresundskraft represents Northern Lights JV’s second Swedish customer, following Stockholm Exergi, and increases its total customer roster to seven across four European nations.

The contract aligns with Northern Lights’ broader commercial scale-up. Phase 1 of the infrastructure, developed under Norway’s national Longship project with 1.5 million tons of annual injection capacity, is fully operational.

In March 2025, Northern Lights launched Phase 2 expansion works to increase total annual storage capacity to more than 5 million tons.

“Öresundskraft’s project contributes to the development of a portfolio approach with shared infrastructure,” said Tim Heijn, Managing Director of Northern Lights JV.
