Incredibly useful keyboard shortcut utility TextExpander now offers a free plan, letting users access its core Snippets feature on the Mac, iPhone, iPad, Windows, and Chrome. Here are the details.

I’ve written in the past about how TextExpander is one of the first apps I install as soon as I get a new Mac.

Over the years, I’ve built up a library of roughly 200 Snippets (TextExpander’s name for text abbreviations that automatically expand into pre-written text), most of which I expand regularly to quickly reply to emails, fill out forms, prepare podcast outlines, pull sponsorship reads, write up show notes, and more.

And while macOS has been steadily improving its native text replacement support, features such as variable support, conditional sections, nested snippets, and math macros make TexExpander an essential tool for me.

TextExpander recently launched a free plan that, as the company tells 9to5Mac, gives access to 5 active Snippets, unlimited library storage, unlimited text expansions, and up to 5 team members. The Free plan also works across Mac, iPhone, iPad, Windows, and Chrome, with the same Snippet library staying in sync across devices.

Granted, the 5-Snippet limit can feel a bit restrictive, particularly since the Free plan only allows one active Snippet to be swapped every two weeks.

Still, it can also be a good way to ease into TextExpander by keeping shorter, simpler text replacements in macOS, while reserving the app for longer or more complex snippets.
