Perplexity upgrades Mac app with ChatGPT-powered voice mode

Zac Hall | Oct 28 2026 - 9:28 am PT 0 Comments

Earlier this year, OpenAI unveiled its gpt-live-1 voice model. This includes the ability for the model to listen to you while it speaks. Starting today, Perplexity has upgraded its Mac app voice mode by using gpt-live-1 under the hood.

The ability for gpt-live-1 to listen while it speaks is still an impressive capability of ChatGPT’s state-of-the-art voice model after several months. Deploying the advanced voice model to Perplexity’s desktop app voice mode is a great way to enhance the overall experience for Pro and Max subscribers.

We’ve updated voice mode in Perplexity. Work across multiple Computer sessions at once, start new tasks, and create and manage Projects in one voice session. It runs on OpenAI’s gpt-live-1. Available now on the Mac app and web for all Pro and Max subscribers. pic.twitter.com/5Fa7yRdKp8

Separately, Perplexity recently launched the ability to run AI directly on the Mac without relying on cloud models. This unlocks offline mode as well as privacy-focused AI workflows.
