Apple strikes deal with AI startup that lets musicians rework recorded music

The EU’s List of Acquisitions website was updated today with details of a deal struck in June between Apple and Samplab, a Swiss startup that described itself as offering “music production for the age of AI.” Here are the details.

Last week, the List of Acquisitions section of the EU’s DMA website was updated with details on Apple’s move to acqui-hire Huxe, a startup founded by former NotebookLM engineers that specialized in generating personalized audio briefings and podcast-style content using AI.

Today, the list was updated yet again, revealing another deal involving Apple and an AI audio company.

Apple Inc. (“Apple”), through a subsidiary, will acquire certain assets of Samplab GmbH (“Samplab”) and offer employment to and hire certain Samplab employees. Samplab develops audio editing tools. Apple (together with its group companies) designs, manufactures and markets smartphones, personal computers, tablets, wearables and accessories, and sells a variety of related services.

Following the deal, Samplab’s website now redirects to Apple’s, while its social media accounts and YouTube channel appear to have been scrubbed of their previous posts and videos.

Previously, Samplab’s website described its “ultimate audio editor for musicians” as a tool that allowed creators to “edit audio files as if you were working with MIDI.” It also touted its ability to:

Detect and edit chords
They stay in key when you change them.
You can even export them as a midi file.

Make any samples sound good together Samplab matches their tempo and key. Easily adapt chords, melodies and drums.
