You don't have to be crazy to work here, but it helps

Two decades ago, Robert Downey Jr. was who you hired if you wanted a memorably weird performance. Before his career renaissance in 2008 as the face of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Downey was a quirky character actor with a history of idiosyncratic roles. It can be fun to go back and reexperience some of his performances from his pre-MCU "weird little freak" era, like Two Girls and a Guy, Weird Science, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, or Chaplin.

In retrospect, however, 2003's Gothika is a weird little freak era for almost every actor in it. Halle Berry headlines as a prison psychiatrist who wakes up as an inmate in one of her own observation cells, but she's only one of a cast of characters who all come off like they're at least a little insane, no matter what side of the cell door they’re on. If that sounds like your sort of jam, Gothika is coming to Netflix on Sept. 1.

Dr. Miranda Grey (Berry) works with inmates at a penitentiary in Connecticut, including Chloe (Penélope Cruz), an inmate who had a psychotic break after killing her stepfather. On her way home after work, Miranda swerves to avoid a girl on the road and crashes her car.

Three days later, she wakes up in her own prison, where her colleague Pete Graham (Downey) reveals her husband Doug (Charles Dutton) has been murdered. Miranda is the only suspect, but she has no memory of what's happened and she's suddenly suffering from what may or may not be hallucinations of the girl from the road.
