People love to joke about how they’ll never finish Red Dead Redemption 2. The game’s detail and depth make it a massive undertaking. Stretching the breadth of story and gameplay across one of the biggest maps in gaming only adds to the challenge. So good luck with Grand Theft Auto 6. Rockstar Games says the whole map is three times bigger than its last open-world hit.
The scale was confirmed to YouTuber TGG in a recent preview of the game at Rockstar North. “[Head of development Rob Nelson] threw some figures at me,” the YouTuber shared. “The map is twice the size of GTA 5‘s map, three times the size of Red Dead 2‘s map. Vice City itself is twice the size of Los Santos. And Vice City and its surrounding suburbs is 11 times bigger than Los Santos and its surroundings, which is, like, nuts, dude.”
The latest extended gameplay reveal gives a sense of that scope, especially during a scene in which one of the two protagonists, Lucia, looks out at a sprawling metropolis on a beautiful sunny day before skydiving off a skyscraper. We’ve also seen footage of the player characters out on jet skis, kayaks, and airboats. Leaked footage of the game has also shown what it looks like to fly in airplanes above the map.
Rockstar maps aren’t the biggest in gaming, but they do usually set the bar for the most dense, polished, and interactive open-world areas.
