Last we saw RollerCoaster Tycoon it was in pretty rickety shape. More than a decade after RollerCoaster Tycoon 3, the follow-up—RollerCoaster Tycoon World—was released to nearly universally poor reviews. Even worse, in one of the all-time dick moves in gaming industry history, Atari launched it exactly one day before rival sim Planet Coaster was due to release. Wow.
That nakedly desperate move didn't help the situation: people liked Planet Coaster and didn't like RCTW, and the Tycoon series has been silent since 2016.
But here we are another decade later, and Atari is bringing RollerCoaster Tycoon back yet again—though I'm already feeling more hopeful about it.
RollerCoaster Tycoon Wonderworks was announced at Gamescom today, and the new entry in the series is being developed by Springloaded, who made the excellent Let's Build a Zoo and is releasing promising gamedev sim Let's Build a Dungeon later this year. That's a good sign, at least!
There's no date on the books yet, and RollerCoaster Tycoon Wonderworks won't be feature complete when it launches: it's "coming soon" to early access. Here's its page on Steam.
