After 6 Years, One of the Rarest Pokémon is Returning to Pokémon Go

Scopely has made the genetically engineered Pokémon Mewtwo the center of its celebration of Pokémon Go’s 10th anniversary. The company reenacted a scene from the hit mobile game’s launch trailer with an invite-only Mewtwo raid in Times Square and gave all players a Mewtwo with perfect stats and a special anniversary background. The company is capping off the party by bringing back the rarest form of Mewtwo for the first time in six years.

The 2019 movie Pokémon: Mewtwo Strikes Back – Evolution, a CGI remake of 1998’s Pokémon: The First Movie, depicted a version of Mewtwo wearing armor meant to contain its immense psychic powers. Armored Mewtwo appeared in five-star raids in Pokémon Go in 2019 as a movie tie-in, and was brought back for Pokémon Day in February 2020. Raiding became much easier following the April 2020 launch of a Remote Raid feature that allows players to sync up digitally rather than in person. That means this will be the first chance many players have to catch the stylish, if less powerful, version of Mewtwo.

m. m. local time Sept. 5 and 6 as part of the Go Fest Mega Finale. Players will also be able to battle Mega Mewtwo X and Mewtwo Y and catch versions of Mewtwo with adventure effects, powers that can be used outside of battles. Dynamic Punch+ increases your damage when fighting in Mega Raids and allows you to break two shields in Super Mega Raids instead of the usual one.
