Square Enix Q1 profit soars following Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth launch on Switch 2 and Xbox

Digital Entertainment sales rose 91.8% to $97.3 million, while operating income surged 510% to $38.2 million

Square Enix reported strong first-quarter growth, with profit rising 175.5% to ¥13.2 billion ($82.9 million).

The company attributed these results to its Digital Entertainment segment, which saw high sales in HD Games, MMO, and Smart Devices/PC Browser sub-segments.

Operating income for its Digital Entertainment segment rose 91.8% to ¥15.5 billion ($97.3 million), driven by strong performance in HD Games.

Net sales in this subsegment increased 98.8% to ¥17.7 billion ($111.1 million), up from ¥8.9 billion ($5.8 million) in the prior year period.

Operating income for this sub-segment rose 510% to ¥6.1 billion ($38.2 million), compared to ¥1.0 billion ($6.2 million) in the same period last year.

These gains were driven by the strong launch of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth on Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and the Microsoft Store. It originally launched on PlayStation 5 in February 2024 and Windows in January 2025.

Sales were also boosted by The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales, alongside increased sales in catalog titles.

Other titles released during the quarter include Octopath Traveler and Octopath Traveler 2 for Switch 2, Star Ocean: The Second Story A on Switch 2, and Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster.

In the MMO Game sub-segment, net sales increased 32.2% to ¥12.7 billion ($79.7 million), while operating income remained steady at ¥3.6 billion ($22.6 million).

Square Enix said these numbers reflected "improved user activity" following the announcement of an expansion pack for Final Fantasy 14.
