It seems to be a bad time to be working in Paradox Interactive's marketing department, as the publisher has apparently just leaked its next big announcement. It appears that Gamescom Opening Night Live 2026 will bring us the reveal of Afterworld, a post-apocalyptic grand strategy game that sounds like Fallout meets Crusader Kings.

Reddit user DimDimio first discovered the name of Afterworld while browsing the official Paradox Forum, where it appeared in a list of "unreleased games" in the site's filters. They then followed Paradox's typical URL conventions to track down the game's official Discord server, which describes Afterworld like this: "Lead a tribe of survivors, rediscover ancient technology, manage wasteland settlements and wage wars of conquest and political struggle in Afterworld, an original post-apocalyptic survival grand strategy game."

I've been unable to independently verify any of this – mentions of Afterworld have apparently been scrubbed from the forum, with no Archive.org backup, and it seems Paradox quickly cut off access to that Discord – but this all matches with the developer's official teases of its new project.

Paradox's official website features a big teaser for its "next grand strategy game," with a countdown set to end during Gamescom Opening Night Live. In the background, a desert storm obscures a scene featuring half-buried structures, a machete, and a stick plunged into the ground with a makeshift flag attached. Sure looks like it could be a teaser for a post-apocalyptic strategy game about laying claim to a newly ravaged world.

Paradox's brand of grand strategy tends to focus much more on politics and relationships between governing leaders than other strategy titles, and while there is potential for plenty of military conflict in these games, it's usually just one factor in a wide array of gameplay systems.
