Amazon steps back from MMOs, transfers operations of Throne and Liberty and Lost Art to NC and Smilegate

UPDATE: Firm will no longer handle global publishing and live ops for the licenced titles, following previous shutdown of in-house games

Update, August 13, 2026: Amazon Game Studios has ended its publishing deal with Smilegate's MMO Lost Ark.

The South Korean developer will take over Lost Ark's live service operations in early 2027 as Amazon fully steps back from the MMO space. In the meantime, Lost Ark will continue to operate under Amazon.

Players' account data will be transferred automatically, and no changes will be made to characters, progression, and items. Wallet balances will also transfer in full.

Original story, August 12, 2026: Throne and Liberty's global publishing service will transfer from Amazon Game Studios to NC (formerly NCSoft).

NC will manage the MMORPG under a single online service, aiming to complete the migration by Q4 2026.

FirstSpark Games, an NC subsidiary, is collaborating with Amazon to transition technical and operational services while maintaining the gameplay environment and assets across all platforms.

Players' account details will remain unchanged across all platforms, which include Steam, PlayStation, Xbox, and NC's cross-platform gaming service Purple.

"For years, Throne and Liberty has been shaped by an incredible community under Amazon Game Studios," NC said in a statement.

"As the creators of Throne and Liberty, we believe this is the right time to take a more direct role in supporting the game and helping shape its future. We have always believed in this world, and we remain deeply committed to its long-term success."

FirstSpark Games CEO Moonyoung Choi added: "Amazon Game Studios has been an excellent partner, and we're grateful to have launched and maintained our MMO thus far with their team.
