Prime Video's RoboCop Reboot Has Officially Found Its Peter Weller Replacement

Amazon's reboot of the RoboCop franchise took a loud, lumbering step forward on Tuesday, officially casting its new Alex Murphy. That character was most famously played by Peter Weller in the 1987 original RoboCop and by Joel Kinnaman in the 2014 reboot. Now, according to a report from Deadline, actor Dan Stevens is stepping into the role of Murphy, aka RoboCop, in the upcoming TV series.

Stevens is best known for his roles in television shows like ITV's Downton Abbey and FX's Legion, and has starred in his share of Hollywood blockbuster fare: Beauty and the Beast, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, and Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb. (He also previously played a robot in the 2021 German sci-fi film I'm Your Man). Stevens will next appear in Onslaught, A24's action-thriller starring Adria Arjona. In other words, Stevens has range.

RoboCop will officially return in an eight-part TV series for Prime Video, Amazon MGM Studios and production company Blumhouse Atomic Monster confirmed in July. The long-rumored series, titled simply RoboCop, has been greenlit for a streaming run on Prime Video, with the franchise's co-creators and co-writers Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner set to executive produce. Peter Ocko (Lodge 49, Pushing Daisies) will serve as executive producer, showrunner, and writer on RoboCop. James Wan, Michael Clear, and Rob Hackett will serve as executive producers for Blumhouse Atomic Monster.

ccording to Amazon MGM's original announcement, RoboCop will tell the story of a giant tech conglomerate that "convinces the city to place a powerful robot on its police force — a robot implanted with the consciousness of a beloved, fallen officer."
