Dungeons & Dragons' Big Gamble Warlock Re-emerges in First Gameplay Trailer

The next AAA Dungeons & Dragons game got a full gameplay reveal at Gamescom Opening Night Live on Tuesday, going well beyond what the action-adventure game's previous teaser trailer showed at last year's The Game Awards. Warlock, from Wizards of the Coast and its in-house development team Invoke Studios, is slated for a 2027 release on consoles and PC, its creators confirmed.

The eight-minute look at Warlock appears to be the closest thing that D&D has to competing with the likes of God of War and Dark Souls.

Warlock is an original, third-person, single-player action-adventure game set in a dark fantasy open world inspired by Dungeons & Dragons. The game stars Kaatri, described as "a veteran warrior who makes a pact to wield otherworldly magic against dark powers." Kaatri is played by Battlestar Galactica’s Tricia Helfer, whose presence draws on characters like Furiosa from Mad Max: Fury Road and Vanessa Ives from Penny Dreadful — the latter especially for her "strange and unnatural and not very clean magic," says Jeff Hattem, VP of creative at Invoke.

Invoke Studios is composed of veteran developers from Tuque Games, founded in 2012 and acquired by Wizards of the Coast as part of the publisher’s growing investment in AAA game development. The studio previously developed the divisive action brawler Dungeons & Dragons: Dark Alliance. For Warlock, the studio is sharpening its focus on gameplay and story, honing in on a single-class fantasy and a brand-new character.

Warlock is currently in development for PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.
