Walmart communications chief to depart after 3 years

Allyson Park’s tenure was by marked intense change at the retail giant, including the departure of longtime CEO Doug McMillon.

Walmart Chief Communications Officer Allyson Park on Sept. 1 is leaving that position and switching to an advisory role, Park told Retail Dive by email. She will be with the retail giant through Feb. 1.

Starting in September, she will advise Dan Bartlett, executive vice president of corporate affairs, as the company conducts an external search for someone to take her place, according to a memo that Bartlett sent to employees on Friday. The roles and direct reports of various executives have been shuffled around in the meantime, according to the memo, which Park shared with Retail Dive.

Park arrived at Walmart three years ago after about a year at Yum Brands and longer stints at candy conglomerate Mars and Coca-Cola. Her time at Walmart has been marked by significant leadership changes — including the departure of longtime CEO Doug McMillon and the subsequent shakeup of leadership under his successor, John Furner.

“Throughout this period, the team has worked to ensure our associates and external stakeholders hear clearly and consistently about our strategy, performance and priorities,” Bartlett said.

In recent years, Walmart has also invested heavily in e-commerce and attracted more higher-income customers at a time when rising costs have challenged households across income levels.

Park also oversaw changes to Walmart’s communications operation, including investments in talent, Bartlett said.

“During her tenure, the team has become more integrated, digitally enabled and closely connected to the business, with an increased focus on strengthening Walmart’s reputation and telling our story consistently across audiences,” he said.
